SENIORS SCENE: Protect yourself from fraud

Workshop, hosted by White Rock Community Policing and RCMP, planned for Nov. 14.

It’s not too late to sign up for the free fraud workshop this Thursday, Nov. 14.

Learn how to recognize the most common personal frauds and how to protect yourself from being a victim.

Co-sponsored by White Rock Community Policing and RCMP, this 1½-hour presentation starts at the White Rock Community Centre at 9 a.m. Another free lecture by White Rock Community Policing is the Nov. 28 Mature Driving class.

Update your knowledge of vehicle safety features and road regulations, as well as self-assess your driving skills and habits. Registration required. Call 604-541-2199.

• There are just two weeks to purchase your tickets to the Kent Street Seniors Society’s Bridge Luncheon.

This fall favourite will be at the Kent Street Activity Centre on Friday, Nov. 29 from noon to 4 p.m. Enjoy a delicious lunch, followed by a friendly afternoon of contract bridge (bring a partner) and draw prizes. Tickets must be purchased in advance, available at Kent Street, White Rock Community Centre and the Centennial Park offices.

Net proceeds from this fundraiser go towards centre projects, such as the recently completed kitchen renovations. Thanks for your support.

• Calling all knitters, quilters, stitchers and sewers.  Bring your own fibre project to the Kent Street Activity Centre on Fridays from 1-3 p.m. and join in on the Stitch & Chat.

• The ever-popular Kent Street Mistletoe Dinner is scheduled for Dec. 5 from 4-7 p.m.

Meet old friends and make new friends in a festive evening of Christmas dinner with all the fixings and fantastic entertainment to get you into the holiday spirit. Tickets are available to members and their guests. Be sure to pick up your tickets early as they do sell out quickly.

• Good Vibrations will get you dancing this week at the Kent Street Wednesday night socials.

Tickets sold at the door are $5 for members/$6 for non-members. Singles 50+ welcome; doors open at 7 p.m., with social dancing 7:30-10:30.

• Mark your calendar. The next Fraser Health drop-in flu clinic for seniors 65+ and those with chronic health conditions will be held at Centennial Park Leisure Centre (14600 North Bluff Rd.) on Thursday, Nov. 14 from 9 a.m. till noon.

The final drop-in clinic will be held at First United Church (15385 Semiahmoo) on Monday, Nov. 18 from 9 a.m. till noon.

Part of the Get Reel Film Series – featuring the best in Canadian film from the Toronto International Film Festival– Rebelle explores the life story of a young African girl from the Sub-Sahara since she has been at war and was abducted by the rebel army.
