The physical layout of a new community garden in Chilliwack will be mapped out at a meeting on Thursday, June 9 at the site on Wells Road.
Project partners Food Matters Chilliwack and Chilliwack Society for Community Living are inviting participants to their second gathering at the Mathieson Centre, 45195 Wells Road.
“Join us in growing and sharing fresh, local food in Chilliwack,” said Rachel Poupere from Food Matters Chilliwack.
They’ll also be deciding on the rules and regulations they’ll adopt to operate the community garden at this week’s gathering in Sardis.
“By joining the Community Gardening team you will become part of an exciting initiative, growing and sharing local produce, creating community around healthy eating, and learning to grow food sustainably, all while playing in the dirt,” added Poupere.
For anyone who missed the first meeting, the group discussed what they’d like to grow and what type of garden they’d like to create.
So far the project has received some generous donations, including a rain barrel, a greenhouse and some gardening tools, but much more will be needed.
Individuals and groups are being sought as volunteers to help with the garden, to sign up for a garden plot, or to donate equipment, supplies and tools.
Donations of lumber to make raised beds, a toolshed and truckloads of good soil are some of the priority items they’re looking for.
