Campbell River Literacy Now has a dynamic line-up of events polanned

Campbell River Literacy Now is inviting the community to celebrate the 16th annual Family Literacy Week Jan. 25 to Jan. 30.

CR Literacy Now provides literacy support to everybody in Campbell River, from the early years through to retirement, and is the sponsor of these events.

A fun-filled week is planned beginning with a free swim on Sunday, Jan. 25 from 12:30 – 4 p.m. at Strathcona Gardens. The Campbell River Museum will also be providing free admission for families to their exhibits throughout the week.

Keep an eye open for Clifford the Big Red Dog during the day on Jan. 27, as he attends family literacy events at both Coho Books and the Vancouver Island Regional Library.

“Clifford was one of my personal favorites as a child, it’s great that he could make it this year to help us celebrate!” says Kat Eddy – Outreach Coordinator, CR Literacy Now.  “He’ll be visiting with children and attending both events.”

Parents who are interested in activities and ideas to engage their young children with literacy can visit ABC Life Literacy’s website at abclifeliteracy.ca.

This year’s events also includes a free Community Poetry Slam event in the Carihi Multi-Purpose room Jan. 27 from 6:30 – 8 p.m.

“We are very excited about co-hosting the Victoria Poetry Project: Raising Voices, with School District 72.  This group is comprised of award winning poets who wish to promote poetry as a means of self- expression, and a way to engage with literature,” Eddysays. “Slam poetry has become an increasingly popular form with Shane Koyczan’s performance at the Opening of the 2010 Winter Olympics.  It also resonates with youth as it has a lyrical component not dissimilar from rap/hip-hop music.”

Pre-registration for this event is not required, doors open at 6 p.m. and some refreshments will be provided.
