Two more fascinating presentations round out the 2014 season of the Grannies à Gogo Morning Travelogue series, following the enthusiastic success of the first two.
“Finding Granny in China” is on Feb. 7; “From Russia With Love” is Feb. 14. These PowerPoint presentations are scheduled for 10 a.m. at the People Place, downstairs in room 006.
Linda Kennedy’s grandparents spent 20 years in China a century ago and she explored Quanzhou city where they worked. She then traveled around China visiting fascinating and famous sites. Along the way she discovered that the complex history of China is comprised of Muslim mosques and decoration, a Christian community with a church that seats 1,000, and symbols from Hinduism in the Buddhist caves near Beijing.
“The Silk Road and the sea brought traders, and they are as much a part of China’s history as the dynasties,” she said.
Bob and Arlene Spearman wrap up this series with a spectacular slice of Russia while they cruised the historic route on the Volga River from Moscow to St. Petersburg. They found that Russia is more than the opulence of the czars or the gulags of the 20th century, and gained insight into historic and modern Russia.
“The beautiful domes of St. Basil’s Cathedral at the entrance to Red Square were built in 1552 by Ivan the Terrible, considered for demolition by Stalin, and saved by an architect who, for his bravery, was awarded a five year prison sentence,” they said, adding that such is the turbulent and diverse history of Russia.
