Leigh Craig gets a great deal of satisfaction in expressing her creativity in her role as an artist and a graphic designer with The NEWS, but she wanted to share her talents and give something back.
That’s why she decided to volunteer to put on an Art in the Park program for children.
The program is held at the picnic shelter in Parksville’s Community Park on Tuesdays and Thursdays during May.
“The NEWS and I thought it would be a good idea to give back to the community,” Craig said. “We’ve had a great community response because there’s not a whole lot available for the young tots to do.”
That has changed, at least for the month of May, while the program lasts.
“Last week we made paper dinosaurs and masks and this week we plan to make garden art — wire sculptures and garden markers, ducks and sheep, pretty little things to put in the garden,” she said.
Craig is no newcomer to teaching the little ones about art, having worked in the past with the Oceanside Community Arts Council and working with The Arrowsmith Community Enhancement Society (ACES), running art classes at the French Creek Community School.
“I have many volumes of art programs available,” she said.
There are two versions of Art in the Park, with the tots slated for lunch time on Tuesdays and the older children up to age 14, scheduled for Thursday evenings from 6-7 p.m.
