Thousands expected for Secwepemc gathering

The Secwepemc First Nation will hold its 34th annual gathering on Aug. 19 to Aug. 21 at the band reservation in Kamloops.

The Secwepemc First Nation will hold its 34th annual gathering on Aug. 19 to Aug. 21 at the band reservation in Kamloops.

Events will take place at the Pow Wow Arbour, the sweat lodge, community hall and ball field and community school. The weekend includes community meals, sports and games, a chiefs’ meeting, language roundtable, hand-drumming contest, entertainment, helicopter tours, cultural workshops, lahal, field trips, a unity ride and canoe journey.

“We look forward to showcasing what we have to offer of our Secwepemc values of caring and sharing, culture, language, stories, songs and dances. We wish to honour you, our relatives and friends,” Chief Ron Ignace said.

About 2,000 people are expected to take part.
