When we think of spectacular natural places, the pictures that come most readily to mind are those of Lake Louise, or the Burgess shale. Really, though, we don’t need to look that far to find a beautiful place.
In fact, just north of town, there’s a lovely path through a part of the wetlands teeming with wildlife. On Sunday, August 21, at 11 a.m., there will be a Walk in the Wetlands, including refreshments and a short talk about this unique ecosystem. All ages are welcome, and the event will happen rain or shine.
This project is part of Get Outside B.C., an initiative designed to encourage people to engage with British Columbia’s culture and natural heritage.
The event is supported by BC Parks, Mountain Equipment Co-op, Child and Nature alliance, CPAWS-BC, Parks Canada, and, locally, Wildsight.
The idea behind this project is to encourage people to enjoy and spend time outside. Here, we are lucky enough to be surrounded by a wide variety of natural playgrounds, and much of it is even within town boundaries. This event will start at 11 a.m. in front of Cats to Cattle, at 1329 11th Ave. N., (over the railroad tracks on the way to the Trans Canada Highway), and we would return between 1:00 and 1:30 p.m. The walk will take us north of town, and refreshments will be provided. Kay deBoer, a Wildsight employee, will be giving a short talk on some of the threats to the wetlands.
So come out and enjoy the wonderful place in which we live, and remember, you don’t always have to look very far to find something beautiful.
