Imaginations will set sail to other continents and fantasy lands as Summer Reading Club is launched at the Vernon library.
“There’s something for every age and interest with the theme, Book A Trip, and from July 4 to August 26 there will be non-stop fun,” said Stephanie Vollick, youth services librarian at the Vernon branch of the Okanagan Regional Library.”
Kids ages five to 18 are invited to join, then record their reading to earn stickers and medals with a chance to earn prizes. As well, there will be weekly events all summer long every Thursday and Saturday.
“Teens last year gave author and editor Harold Rhenisch rave reviews, and thanks to Friends of the Library they will have the opportunity once again to spend a week working on their writing with him.”
Join in weekly book discussions and comic book club for youth ages 13 to 18 Tuesday evenings in the library community room. Teens who want input on future programs can join the Teen Advisory Group.
Tweens ages nine to 12 will celebrate the fictional worlds of Hogwarts, Gotham, Narnia, Adventure Time and Middle Earth with a theme party every Thursday. Saturdays they can read about and experience different time periods with excitement at the library including live sword fighting.
“Kids ages five to eight will be immersed in the jungle, desert, ocean and space on Tuesdays or Wednesdays with puppet shows, storytelling, books and crafts.”
Special guests will include Leif David the magician and Uncle Chris the Clown. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Free registration for each event opens two weeks prior to the event. Families are encouraged to pick whatever themes or events work for them, as each day has separate registration.
“Even if you can’t make it to events in person you can participate from home by filling out a reading record to earn a medal or completing take-home challenges for a chance to win fantastic books or a subscription to Little Passports.”
Toddlers and preschoolers can attend Story Time with their families every Monday and Saturday.
“And for the first time, adults are included in the Summer Reading Club — see the library for a chance to win a $50 gift card to a local bookstore.”
