Thirteen-year-old Justyna Lam and her two aunts, Kelly Weeks and Surrey’s Joanne Saunders, donated their locks to the Wigs for Kids Program at BC Children’s Hospital.
Together, they also raised almost $2,000 for the program which makes wigs for children who have undergone treatment for cancer and have lost their hair as a result.
All three donated at the same time four years ago and Justyna also donated her hair when she was four year old. In fact, she has only had three hair cuts in 13 years and each time, she donated to the program.
Last month was Justyna’s birthday and she decided to have a very small celebration so she could donate the extra $200 that her mom would have spent on her birthday. She also made bracelets to sell so she could donate the proceeds to the program.
Salim of Hennessey Salon in Richmond and 3 of his stylists donated their time and skills to the cause by cutting and styling the three women’s hair. Bev Friesen, Chairperson for the Wigs For Kids Program picked up the hair and donated funds from the salon.
To donate, hair must be a minimum of eight inches long and donors are encouraged to raise pledges leading up to their haircut. Hair donations help reduce the cost of the wigs and pledges help to pay for making them.
