Almost everyone on the floor is smiling and sometimes there’s a burst of laughter as the square dancers move to the music and caller’s cues.
“Sometimes I think square dancing is Vernon’s best-kept secret,” said Yvonne Leduc, president of Star Country Squares. “Square dancing is the perfect combination of fun, friendship and fitness and the music runs anywhere from modern and country to the classics. Square dance calls are always done in English so you can enjoy this pastime all over the world.”
While Leduc and her husband, Len, have been square dancing for years, the Star Country Squares has members of all levels of skill and there are beginner classes every year.
“If you can walk, you can learn to square dance, so come out and join us for the open house and see what we do,” said Len Leduc.
Square dancing comes from traditional dances in Europe which were brought to North America where the caller was added to help dancers master more complex steps. There is now more choice of clothing styles for dancers and people can take lessons in regular casual wear and soft-sole shoes.
The Star Country Squares open house takes place Thursday at the Halina Centre. Beginner lessons will continue on Thursdays. Experienced dancers are invited to join the regular club night Wednesday at Knox Presbyterian Church starting Sept. 28 at 7:30 p.m.
