When a new learner walks through the doors of Project Literacy, he or she is embarking on a life changing mission.
Our learners come from diverse backgrounds and span multiple generations, each with a unique reason for reaching out and facing critical challenges. We could meet a mother like Philomena, who having worked for years to bring her family to Canada, needed to improve her English to meet immigration requirements. We could meet a young man like Les, a single dad, who was determined to overcome a Mathematics “block” so that he could enter a plumbing apprenticeship program. He wanted to build a stable career and earn enough money to support his son. Whatever the reasons, our tutors provide the steady, learner-centered support needed to achieve results.
Our tutors come from equally diverse backgrounds and they too span multiple generations. From accountants to teachers, retirees to new graduates, these individuals dedicate their time to helping others achieve their full potential—and they tell us that they receive as much benefit as they give. They feel a great sense of satisfaction from empowering others and often learn as much from their students as they teach them. The lessons they receive are inspirational and demonstrate the depth of human aspiration and determination.
