For the last few weeks walkers have been gathering at the Mount 7 Rec Plex in Golden to work out in a safe environment as winter has made walking in Golden a little more treacherous.
Sarah Wegelin, Special Event Co-ordinator for the Town of Golden, is encouraging everyone to get out of the snow and stretch those muscles, and she feels the program offers many different benefits for those people who come out and take part.
“This is for people of all ages who can come out and get out of the snow. The sidewalks can be slippery and in some cases people have limited mobility. The program gives people the chance to come out and walk,” Wegelin said.
Wegelin said this was an important program for people in Golden because, “In my experience as a person living here, trying to walk around in this weather is challenging.” The town is also providing pedometers so people can see how far they are walking and if they feel like trying to challenge themselves they can at their own pace.
“We are keeping track of the steps as well so at the end of the program we will be able to see how many steps we have walked,” Wegelin added.
People attending the program spoke of how nice it was to have a place where they could come to work out while at the same time meeting new people.
“You are afraid when you are walking on sidewalks. You always have to brace yourself as you step when you are walking around,” said weekly participant in the program Terry Schiesser. “It is nice to be able to socialize too. It is a good way to meet people and the price is right. I do not want to risk falling. It is nice to be able to walk and feel safe.
The group will be taking Dec. 28 off due to the holidays but will return again in January. For the first three weeks in January the group will meet on Thursdays from 1:15 p.m.- 3 p.m. before moving back to Wednesdays on January 25.
