Canada Summer Jobs has created 154 summer jobs for youth in the riding of Surrey Centre (Whalley and Guildford), with more than $500,000 granted to the recipients this year – a record high.

Canada Summer Jobs is an initiative put forth by the federal government to provide funding to local non-profit organizations, community centers, and small businesses to help create summer jobs opportunities for students aged 15-30.

Budget 2016 has committed to increase the number of summer jobs funded nationally from 35,000 to 70,000 this year and reconfirmed funding of the Canada Summer Jobs Program to $339 million to be delivered over three years by the federal government.

“These summer jobs are aimed to help non-profit organizations and small businesses in Surrey Centre with the extra support they need while creating valuable work experience for young Canadians,” said Randeep Sarai, MP for Surrey Centre.

Local priorities set for Surrey Centre this year included crime prevention and public safety initiatives, improvement and growth of small businesses, and prioritizing local organizations that provide programs and services for those who are homeless, low-income, youth at risk, or senior citizens.
