Snow is expected to continue into the afternoon and possibly evening for the Lower Mainland today (Jan. 17), with schools closed throughout the region.
A weather warning from Environment Canada remains in effect for the Fraser Valley and Metro Vancouver. Total snowfall accumulations of 15 to 25 cm are expected for the Fraser Valley and between 10 and 20 cm for Metro Vancouver.
Blowing snow in strong northeast or east winds can also be expected.
“A Pacific low pressure system is bringing snow to the south coast from tonight through early this evening. Poor visibility due to blowing snow is also a travel hazard in addition to heavy snowfall,” the warning reads.
Schools are closed for the Mission, Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Langley, Maple Ridge, Fraser Cascade, Delta and Surrey school districts.
Environment Canada says visibility could be reduced at times in heavy snow and the conditions may contribute to transportation delays.
“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow,” Environment Canada says.
