Only one new case of COVID-19 has been identified in the Golden area from Feb. 7-13, according to the BC CDC.

It is the first reported case in the area since January, with no new cases in the first week of February.

The Golden area encompasses the Town of Golden and extends south towards Invermere, out to the Alberta/B.C. border and west towards Rogers Pass. It encompasses communities such as Nicholson, Parson and Donald.

In the East Kootenays Health Service Delivery Area, there were only three new cases, with Windermere area (Invermere) and Kimberley each reporting one new case, in addition to the one Golden case. Creston, Cranbrook and Fernie each reported no new cases.

On the other side Rogers Pass, Revelstoke reported 22 new cases in the same time frame.

Across B.C., there is evidence that shows that the curve is slowly declining. In Interior Health, there has been a decline in active cases, hospitalizations and ICU admissions.

Numbers in Fraser and Vancouver Coastal health are creeping back up and the North continues to struggle with case counts.

The Physicians of Golden report that the increase in cases in these areas are being linked to social gatherings, despite the current public health orders and stressed that continuing to gather reduces the likelihood of restrictions being eased in B.C. at the end of the month.

The Physicians emphasized the need to be vigilant until mass vaccination clinics begin to open, which is projected to occur in April.

“Until then we need to be particularly vigilant about masking, keeping a safe physical distance, and not participating in social gatherings,” read the Feb. 16 update from the Physicians.

“These are the tools we have, we know they work, and we need to use them.”
