A single-motor vehicle accident 10 kilometres east of Prince Rupert resulted in an estimated 100 litres of diesel being spilled into the ditch.
On August 2, a white Dodge pick-up truck, carrying a portable service tank filled with diesel fuel, hit the rock wall just past the turn-off to Ridley Island on Highway 16.
Prince Rupert RCMP attended the scene where the truck had turned over on its side. A 21-year-old female was taken to the hospital and the spill was dealt with by the highway maintenance crew, Sgt. Dave Uppal said.
The highway was shut down for one hour in both directions.
Spill pads were placed in the ditch and the Ministry of Environment is monitoring the situation.
“The RP (Responsible Party) were on site yesterday (August 7) and changed out any pads that appeared to have any contamination on them and placed new, clean pads down. They are planning on attending either tonight or tomorrow morning and doing the same,” said David Karn, public affair officer for the ministry of environment.
