13 parks, culture projects could be completed in Mission in 2020

Council approves $100,000 to implement projects in Parks, Recreation, Arts and Culture Master Plan

Mission council has voted to spend $100,000 to help implement several projects that were identified in the Parks, Recreation, Arts and Culture Master Plan.

During last week’s council meeting, Maureen Sinclair – director of parks, recreation and culture – told council that the plan includes more than 85 formal recommendations. Staff have identified 13 short-term projects that could be completed this year.

Included in the list is the repair of two public art pieces – the eagle and sturgeon – located close to the waterfront.

“The eagle came down in a windstorm and ended up in the rocks, so it has to be repaired and reinstalled. The sturgeon is the other one. Some of it is just weathering, but there has been some vandalism done to it,” Sinclair said.

There is already funding available for the repairs as well as two other projects – the replacement of the interpretive signs at Fraser River Heritage Park and the renovation of the boat launch.

“The boat launch, in particular, is really about repairing the pavement… We might take some of the $100,000 to do some tree planting, just to make it feel more user-friendly.”

Sinclair said the hope is to complete all of the projects, some of which she called quite small, by the end of 2020.

Other projects listed include:

Jack Pool Plaza / Waterfront:

• Install information panel at Jack Poole Plaza, providing interpretive information for waterfront development and recognize the National Heritage River status of the Fraser

• Replace the banners damaged during the recent winter storms

• Develop an alternate planting plan for the green wall

Fraser River Heritage Park:

• Reduce the size of the Clayburn compound and provide additional screening

• Enter into a formal agreement with the Knights of Columbus related to the care of the grotto

• Improvements to the administration building

• Complete a restoration plan to upgrade the Flag Plaza

Other Projects:

• Tree planting at the Mission Rotary Sports Park

• Co-sponsor a second World Café

• Support new, emerging sports
