Forest fires aren’t something that’s happening only elsewhere in B.C.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue counted 15 bush fires in the past month, according to a City of Nanaimo press release, and is asking citizens to be vigilant.

“The number of fires are very concerning, especially since the majority are human caused,” said Umesh Lal, fire prevention officer with Nanaimo Fire Rescue.

The fire department notes that there were zero bush fires during the same month last year, whereas there have been five just this past week.

Four recent fires were attributed to poorly discarded smoking material, three were intentionally set and one was caused by fireworks.
