It's the highest amount reported in a single week by the BC CDC

The BC CDC is reporting 16 new cases of COVID-19 in the Golden area for the week of April 25 – May 1.

It’s the most cases reported in a single week in the area since last week, where 15 new cases were reported. The previous high was 14, during the week of Dec. 27 – Jan 2.

Golden is now experiencing one of the highest rates of infection per capita in the province, with over 20 cases per population of 100,000.

Neighbouring communities that have had similar rates of infection, such as Revelstoke and Windermere, have seen a sharp decrease in new cases, with Revelstoke reporting seven and Windermere four, after being targeted with vaccination clinics after being deemed hotspots.

Golden will be seeing an increase in vaccination starting next week, when Interior Health launches a community wide vaccine clinic for those 18+ in the community.

The Physicians of Golden are encouraging all those 18+ to register to be vaccinated to help get over the pandemic in time for summer.

“What can you do to help our community right now? If you are 18 or older and not yet registered, please go online to register. As more vaccine arrives, public health needs to be able to contact you quickly to get shots in arms as fast as possible,” read the May 3 Physicians of Golden update on Facebook.

“We are all tired of the ebb and flow of case counts, and the successive waves of this never ending pandemic. Residents of our community, who have worked so hard to control this virus, are tired. The health care workers who provide care are tired. Officials trying to navigate and support the rules are tired.

“But together we are managing this pandemic right now in our community.”

Overall, numbers are decreasing in B.C., with both a decrease in the average daily case counts and a slight decrease in hospitalizations. ICU numbers remain high.

Maps of new cases reported each week in each local health area can be found on the BC Centre for Disease Control website under BC COVID-19 data. Also available are graphs from the BCCDC Comparisons App showing how each health authority is doing in terms of positive test rates by month.
