An 18-year-old Langley man wearing a Scream movie mask and black hoody was arrested, after a foot chase with police through Langley City on Thursday morning.
In the early morning, police were called after a Langley resident interrupted someone breaking into a vehicle in the 5600 block of 201A Street. The caller said the suspect wore a black hoody, a Scream mask and was carrying a backpack.
An officer arrived in the area quickly, and located a man matching the description provided. As soon as the officer got out of his patrol car to talk to the suspect, he immediately began running.
A police dog was called and managed to establish a track through an alley, a construction site, across Fraser Highway and ultimately to the area of 200 Street and 57 Avenue, where the suspect had already been arrested by other officers in the area.
The teen was taken to court the same day.
“We have initiated a very direct approach for our Theft from Auto response that involves a number of investigative units. This is an example of our comprehensive and directed strategy coming to fruition,” said Langley RCMP Insp. Amrik Virk.
It’s obvious that theft from vehicles continues to be a problem for Langley residents, said Virk. Arrests in the two most recent cases may go a long way to slowing the trend, he said.
However, police warn residents to remain vigilant. They say they should continue watching out for each other and when they see suspicious behaviour around parked vehicles, they are asked to call the police.
