2012 Cariboo Gold Rush Marathon cancelled

Warm weather, lack of snow and no meaningful weather changes in sight, organizers force to cancel Cariboo Gold Rush Marathon

The Cariboo Marathon has a long tradition of being a first-class competition, but the 2012 version, slated for Feb. 4, had to be cancelled.

The difficult decision was made Jan. 25.

Due to the unseasonably warm weather, serious lack of snow and no change in the conditions in the foreseeable future, it is with “great reluctance” the Cariboo Marathon Committee has decided to cancel this year’s Cariboo Gold Rush Marathon event, says committee chair Nicola Maughn.

“It was felt that if trail conditions were marginal, it would be better to cancel the event and preserve the marathon’s reputation rather than push on with a lesser quality event.”

The marathon had to be cancelled in 2010 due to lack of volunteers, but was successfully resurrected in 2011.

Maughn notes skiers who have already registered will receive full refunds.

“It is hoped better snow conditions will prevail in 2013 and once again the first Saturday in February will see the 99 Mile trails in pristine condition and the Cariboo Marathon hosting a world-class event.”

The Cariboo Marathon Committee thanks all the volunteers and sponsors for their support and looks forward to a better year in 2013, she adds.

There will be a family ski to the Beanstalk Cabin on Feb. 4 at 11 a.m. Bring some hotdogs and marshmallows to roast.
