Traffic congestion on the way to Abbotsford International Airport is set to improve, with the widening of Mt. Lehman Road being promised by government.
Local MP Jati Sidhu, along with local and provincial politicians announced $22 million in funding to expand a section of the road from two to four lanes, along a two-kilometre stretch between north of Simpson Road to north of the airport.
A press release states that, once the project is complete, movement of people and goods will be improved to and from the U.S. border.
The project will also improve intersections and drainage along the corridor, the release states.
Bike lanes will also be added to both sides of the stretch of road.
“This lane expansion will improve safety and efficiency on Mt. Lehman Road, as well as accommodate pressures from projected growth in the local regional and international economies for the next 25 years,” according to the statement.
Funding for the project will come from all three levels of government, with the largest portion, more than $11.5 million, coming from the provincial pocket.
The federal government has pledged just over $8 million, with the city of Abbotsford kicking in $2 million.
“Public infrastructure connects people, supports job creation and boosts economic development,” said Sidhu, in the statement. “Working in partnership with every order of government, we are making smart investments that will foster a thriving middle class by opening the country to new economic, social and environmental possibilities.”
Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun called the project “a significant step towards building a vibrant economy and a complete community, reinforcing Abbotsford as the regional hub of the Fraser Valley.”
