As Environment Canada forecasters warn of winds expected to gust up to 100 km/h today, more than 2,500 BC Hydro customers in South Surrey are among thousands in the Lower Mainland to lose power this morning.

According to an outage list on the utility’s website, the local pocket went dark just before 9 a.m., and affected those within the boundaries of 28 to 20 avenue, and 160 to 176 street.
The cause is “under investigation” and crews were estimated to be on site at 10 a.m., according to the website.
Trees down across wires affected an additional 76 customers in an area north of 40 Avenue, west of 176 Street, east of 160 Street and south of 56 Avenue shortly before 10 a.m.
The outages prompted the City of Surrey to issue a tweet at 10:30 a.m., reminding motorists to remember to use the four-way stop procedure at signalized intersections that are without power, as well as at sites where the light is flashing red.

Additional outages affecting the Semiahmoo Peninsula as of 12:30 p.m. include one on the Langley border, between 32 and 44 avenues, and 192 to 202A streets. Deemed “under investigation,” it is impacting 1,991 customers, according to the website.
One attributed to the windstorm, affecting 2,014 customers, stretches between 52 to 68 avenues, west of 196A Street and east of 190 Street. A second has left nearly 550 customers – located north of 20 Avenue, south of 54 Avenue, east of 184 Street and west of 197A Street – in the dark.
Throughout the Lower Mainland and Sunshine Coast, 69,692 customers were listed as without power as of 1 p.m.
