30 miserable-looking Abbotsford students from 1917

Readers noted that century-old photo showed a less-than-impressed set of students

We chose one photo to headline the package simply because of the well-composed nature of the shot. But readers pointed out that the kids didn’t look happy. In fact, almost every single child looked non-plussed bordering on miserable.

This wasn’t abnormal for the time – a host of reasons have been posited why old photos often included unhappy-looking subjects. But even among the dozen or so photos we presented yesterday, most featured at least some happy kids. Not this photo, however.

In that moment, life was clearly giving these kids lemons. One-hundred years later, though, it’s time for some lemonade. So, without further delay, a closer look at the faces of 30 kids and one teacher when someone decided to take a picture and forgot to encourage someone, anyone, to smile.
