500 more cars plug morning rush

With the majority of commuters back from holiday, morning traffic jams again plague the Trans-Canada Highway heading into Victoria.

For drivers spending an hour in their car each morning, it may be little comfort to know that the wait isn’t as bad as it could be.

When the Island Highway Improvement Project began in July, commuters who drove that route were encouraged to reroute to the Trans-Canada Highway or to take transit.

A recent traffic study revealed that while Island Highway sees 1,500 fewer eastbound vehicles between 6:30 and 9 a.m., only one third of that traffic, or about 500 cars, is diverting to the Trans-Canada Highway.

The remainder are either leaving their car at home, taking transit or travelling at a different time of day, according to a study conducted by Bunt & Associates.
