Abbotsford wants to host the 2013 or 2014 B.C. Seniors Games.
Mark Taylor, general manager of parks, recreation and culture, proposed the idea to council on Monday, saying approximately $2 million in positive economic impact could come to the community if the bid is approved.
“An economic impact study was performed on the Richmond games (2009) and it showed a significant gain,” said Taylor.
He explained the organizers put the bids out two years at a time, and if accepted, Abbotsford would host either 2013 or 2014.
As part of the bid, Taylor said a cash donation of $80,000 and in-kind donation of $60,000 should be made available if Abbotsford is accepted.
The BC Seniors Games Society provides event management services and $85,000 in provincial funding to the host city as well.
Abbotsford Mayor George Peary said he has some “insight into these games,” as Abbotsford hosted them in 2006.
“These seniors are going out, having fun and participating – and good for them for doing so,” said Peary.
The deadline to apply is June 30.
