The Abbotsford Farm and Country Market kicked off their summer season on Saturday, and celebrated the beginning of its tenth year of providing local produce and artisan products in Abbotsford’s downtown.

Organizers are currently seeking new volunteers for the market, which runs 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday on Montrose Avenue at George Ferguson Way.

Bruce Fatkin, the market manager, said people come for the local produce but stay for the sense of community, explaining that they have a dedicated group of volunteers, but are looking for more.

“We can be really flexible on how much people want to participate.”

Fatkin said they need volunteers to help with the early morning set-up, the information table – handing out fliers and answering questions – and managing social media accounts.

The market has grown in recent years, which Fatkin said has increased the variety of vendors and brought in a dedicated group of visitors, usually about 1,200 to 1,300 each Saturday.

“The market is all about connecting local citizens with local food.”

Vendors sell locally grown and organic produce, as well as made-in-B.C. jams, jewelry, artisan cheeses and breads, meat and eggs, and more. Gwen Settle, treasurer and market ambassador, said vendors are knowledgeable and can provide advice on how to use their produce and products.

Anyone interested in volunteering can contact Bruce Fatkin at 604-996-1542. For more information, visit www.abbotsfordfarmandcountrymarket.com, or their Facebook page.
