The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) has sent out a notice warning locals that distraction thieves are back in town.
Two distraction-style jewelry thefts in the last two weeks are currently under investigation.
The victims in both incidents are elderly and were out on a walk when they were approached by a woman who got out of a vehicle. The woman began hugging the victim and making small talk.
A short time later, the woman returned to the vehicle and left. It was then that the victim noticed that their jewelry had been removed.
The female suspect in both incidents is described as South Asian or Middle Eastern, 50 to 60 years old, with a heavy build and black hair.
A woman with a similar appearance is also suspected to be involved in the sale of fake jewelry in an Abbotsford parking lot. The description of the vehicle used in these incidents has varied, and includes a grey SUV, red SUV, and black van.
The APD noted that similar thefts have been occurring in other Lower Mainland communities and it’s possible that multiple thieves could be working as a group around the region.
Local cops recommend that valuable items be concealed under clothing when in public, and avoid allowing strangers into your personal space.
Anyone with information regarding these incidents is asked to call the APD at 604-859-5225, or text 222973 (abbypd).
