In an effort to beautify the area, the City of Abbotsford will soon be moving power and phone lines underground along Tretheway street between South Fraser Way and George Ferguson Way.
The city recently received a $200,000 grant from BC Hydro roughly a third of the costs to move the power lines underground. Other costs, including moving Telus and Shaw lines underground, along with engineering work and contingency funds will push the price of the project to $1.6 million.
The undergrounding was part of a previous plan to move lines underground in several city locations. Action was spurred at this time after the city received a request by the developers of La Galleria project at 2860 Tretheway Street. In addition to the BC Hydro grant, the developer will pay $85,000 toward the project. The remainder – 1.3 million, will come from the city’s existing overhead utilities conversion account, which currently has $2.75 million.
