Abbotsford is trying to lure a call centre that would employ more than 300 workers to the city.

An Ontario business is considering setting up a call-centre in Abbotsford that could employ more than 300 workers, the city’s business, innovation, growth and attraction committee heard this week.

Abbotsford’s economic development staff reported that the city is “in the selection process” for the proposed facility, which requires between 30,000 and 50,000-square-feet.

The company is one of several business considering Abbotsford that are mentioned in the team’s monthly report.

Economic development staff also write that they are helping a large gluten-free bakery from Metro Vancouver “with potential relocation opportunities,” along with a shrimp farm that is currently negotiating regarding local land options.

Meanwhile, Optic Zoo, a company that provides high-capacity fibre optic cables, is in the midst of approving its final route. The company provides “dark fiber” networks that can carry huge amounts of data required by data centres, call centres and technology capacity. Staff write that the cable has about 10 times the capacity of typical consumer fiber optic networks.

The company’s route would see the cable running up Riverside Road, west along King Road at McCallum to Foy Road, north on Clearbrook Road to South Fraser Way, and along Trethewey and up Gladwin Road to Downes Road.
