An Abbotsford woman with mobility issues is devastated after her electric scooter went missing from her property.

Michelle Hudson has had a diabetes diagnosis for about six years, now, and her daughter, Kayla Hudson, says ulcers in her legs have limited her mobility.

“She can walk a little bit, but it’s really hard for her to walk far distances, like when she needs to get groceries or something like that,” Kayla said of her 47-year-old mother. “Also, it’s rechargeable so it doesn’t cost her money to go out.”

But three years ago Michelle’s husband, who had recently taken a second job at a scooter repair shop that gave them a bit of a discount and got a good tax return, surprised Michelle with the scooter, a cherry red Motorino XPn.

“She was like ‘oh my goodness!’ and she’s freaking out, she’s so happy. It was a big surprise because she never got her licence. She was a stay-at-home mom,” Kayla said.

“It was probably the happiest day I’ve ever seen her, other than her wedding day. … She was in foster care when she was younger, so she’s had a very, very rough life. She’s never owned something that’s hers, so that was the first thing that she’s ever really owned that she could say was hers and nobody could take it away from her.”

But Saturday morning, Kayla said her mother texted her to say that the scooter had gone missing.

“I called her, because I thought she was joking. And then she’s hysterically upset and crying,” Kayla said, adding she rode her bicycle around to see if it was left anywhere.

“[I’m doing] anything to get it back or help my mom. She’s done so much for me and other people. … She takes care of everyone in the family. She goes out in the winter time and gives out clothes and scarves and food to the homeless. She’s a really good person, and I can’t believe someone would steal it,” Kayla said, adding her mother has been dealing with some personal issues of late that have affected her mental health.

“She feels like her freedom has been taken away. I just don’t know what to do. I’m trying to help her in any way I can.”
