Accident sends skateboarder to hospital

The incident happened at 27th Street and 43rd Avenue just after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday

A teenaged skateboarder suffered minor injuries after being struck by a car in a marked crosswalk Tuesday.

The incident happened at 27th Street and 43rd Avenue just after 7:30 p.m.

“The driver of a 2008 Nissan car was northbound on 27th Street and was turning on to 43rd Street when he struck a young male on his skateboard,” said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk. “The driver said he did not see the boy in the crosswalk.”

Witnesses said the traffic light for the pedestrian was green and the skateboarder, 14, who was on his board, was in the crosswalk.

The teen was taken to Vernon Jubilee Hospital for treatment of his minor injuries.

The driver of the Nissan was charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian and for not having a valid driver’s licence.
