More affordable housing is coming to Victoria.
Tuesday morning commenced the start of construction of Madrona at Dockside Green, which will bring 49 rental units to the market next summer.
The project, which consists of two, three storey buildings at 384 Harbour Rd., will offer a broad mix of rental homes, ranging from studios to four bedroom townhouses for singles, couples and families.
Homes will be rented to households with incomes in the range of $28,000 to $65,000. Each home will come with a bike, B.C. Transit pass subsidy and access to the Modo car share program to encourage more walking and cycling. The homes will also be pet friendly and non smoking.
“There is tremendous demand for workforce rental housing — particularly for families,” said Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps in a news release. “This project will provide quality homes for approximately 90 citizens in a neighbourhood that is truly sustainable, welcoming and inclusive.”
The project comes on stream as Dockside is finalizing its new neighbourhood plan that will see the build out of the remaining one million square feet of the mixed-use neighbourhood.
The project is the first in Victoria for the Catalyst Community Developments Society — a Vancouver-based not-for-profit developer of workforce affordable housing.
