The designer of the wood portion of a ceiling at the new Alberni District Secondary School has won an award.

The annual Wood Works B.C. wood design awards has granted the wood innovation award to Brian Woudstra, of StructureCraft Builders, for the WoodWave structural panel at the new ADSS on Roger Street.

The 5,600 square foot roof structure of the small gymnasium is the part that Woudstra won the award for. It is similar in design to the WoodWave used at the Richmond Olympic Oval.

The wood supplied to StructureCraft came from the Alberni Valley, and was made possible through an initiative with the Woodtech 21 group.

The WoodWave replaced standard steel decking on open steel joists. The idea met project requirements for structural efficiency and acoustic absorption.
