A Port Alberni resident is dead and another in hospital with life-threatening injuries after a single vehicle accident in Duncan on Sunday morning.
Emergency crews responded to calls of an accident on the Trans-Canada Highway at Bench Road in Duncan shortly before 8 a.m., Cpl. Jon Stuart of the North Cowichan/ Duncan RCMP said in a news release.
A vehicle traveling north on the highway slammed into a light standard at the intersection trapping the three occupant inside.
One male passenger in the front seat was pronounced dead at the scene. The male driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. And a female passenger in the rear seat was taken to hospital with minor injuries. All are from Port Alberni and in their early 20’s, Stuart said.
Chek News is reporting that the driver and rear seat passenger were wearing their seatbelts but that it’s undetermined if the man who died was.
An RCMP collision reconstruction team and the BC Coroner’s Service are investigating the accident.
Initial indications are that fatigue may have been a contributing factor in the incident, but the investigation is continuing, Stuart said.
