Alberni man shot on Third Avenue

A 49-year-old man is suffering from non-life-threatening injuries after he was apparently shot at while cycling in a neighbourhood in Port Alberni early Tuesday morning.

Port Alberni RCMP received a 911 call from a man at 5:08 a.m. Tuesday saying he had been shot in the leg minutes earlier in the area of Third Avenue and Mar Street, RCMP Cpl. Amelia Hayden said.

“The male rode his bike to the Husky Gas station (on Third Avenue) where he called for help,” Hayden said in a news release. “The man received a non-life-threatening injury that appears to be consistent with a gunshot.”

He was transported via ambulance to West Coast General Hospital for treatment.

A 56-year-old Port Alberni man was arrested at approximately 9:40 a.m. over the incident. Hayden said she couldn’t speculate why the shooting occurred.

“They were known to each other and yes, they were known to us,” she said. “The police investigation is still ongoing.”

There is no further danger to the public in the uptown area, Hayden added.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or heard any loud noises around that time frame are asked to contact the Port Alberni RCMP at 250-723-2424 or call Alberni Valley Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
