A man convicted of a series of brutal sexual assaults in Port Alberni in 1992 has died in  a Lower Mainland prison.

Keith Lucky Whetstone, 64, died after a lengthy illness at the Regional Treatment Centre in Abbotsford, according to a news release from Corrections Services Canada — Pacific Region issued on March 5.

In 1993, Whetstone was sentenced to 11 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 25-year-old woman and two 11-year-old girls in Port Alberni.

He was serving a seven-year sentence for robbery at the time of his death.
