Alberta woman jailed after causing accident on Hwy. 97 in stolen truck

Twenty-nine-year-old Brittany Pettit pleads guilty to possession of stolen property, failure to stop at the scene of an accident.

A 29-year-old Red Deer, Alta. woman received more than 100 days jail time after causing a motor-vehicle accident while driving a stolen truck.

On Oct. 6, in Kamloops Provincial Court, 29-year-old Brittany Pettit  pled guilty to one count of possession of property obtained by crime and received a sentence of 110 days in jail and a $100 victim surcharge. She also pled guilty to one count of failure to stop at the scene of accident and received a sentence of two months in jail, a $100 victim surcharge and an eighteen month criminal driving prohibition.

The sentencing relates to incidents of Oct. 1, when around 2:15 p.m. Chase RCMP responded to a report of an erratic, possibly impaired driver, in a Chevy crew-cab pick-up truck. Chase RCMP Sgt. Gary Heebner said the truck was being followed by a witness, both headed southbound on Highway 97 towards Vernon.

Near Westwold, the driver of the truck caused a collision after it passed a motorcycle driver and then hit the brakes.

“The motorcycle crashed, and the rider suffered non-life-threatening injuries to his head,” said Heebner. “He was aided by passersby, including a paramedic.”

The sergeant said the truck continued south, and eventually turned onto Mill road, where it stopped at a campground and the driver got out of the truck. At this point, said Heebner, police had determined the truck had been stolen within the past hour from Kamloops.

Chase RCMP located and secured the truck, while officers searched for the driver.

“People camping there stated that the female appeared to be intoxicated by alcohol or drugs, and she had walked away from the area,” said Heebner. “Other campers indicated that she had suddenly joined their campsite and was seated in a chair at the campfire.”

The driver, Pettit, was placed under arrest.
