Nanaimo RCMP have ruled out alcohol as a factor in a crash between a motorcycle and a van that occurred earlier this month.
The collision happened shortly before midnight April 8 at the intersection of the old Island Highway and 107th Street.
Immediately following the accident police reported alcohol was a factor on the part of the 23-year-old motorcyclist, but they have since reversed that position.
“At the initial crash scene there were factors that led officers to believe that alcohol was a contributing factor and now that investigation has continued we have determined that alcohol was not a contributing factor,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.
Investigators are currently waiting for a report from a traffic re-constructionist to help in determining the speed of the motorcycle and the actions of the driver of the van at the time of the collision. Police have spoken with witnesses to the crash and, so far, no determination has been made about charges to either driver.
The motorcyclist remains in hospital in Victoria.
