Aldergrove Recreation Centre receives new name

The Aldergrove Recreation Centre will now be named in recognition of its naming sponsor, Aldergrove Credit Union

The Aldergrove Recreation Centre will sport a new name when it opens, thanks to sponsorship from a longstanding community business, the Aldergrove Credit Union.

The facility’s new title — the Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre — was unveiled, along with a facility logo, by the Township of Langley Monday morning on the grounds where the recreation centre will soon be built.

Aldergrove Credit Union, which has served the Aldergrove community since 1954, has made an initial financial contribution of $250,000 for the first five-year operating period.

“This significant financial contribution fits well with our values, vision and mission which are heavily weighted to the importance of building strong and healthy communities,” said CEO Gus Hartl, who attended the ceremony with members of his board and staff.

“This is a big moment for us and the community of Aldergrove. We look forward to the day when the doors open and people can begin to enjoy all of the fun activities that this facility will offer.”

The community centre will feature a covered outdoor pool with a shallow end, six competitive swimming lanes and a deep end for diving. The pool will be open year-round and heated in the winter time using excess energy produced from the cooling of the ice at the adjacent arena. The centre’s arena will include a fitness centre, indoor walking surface and multipurpose rooms.

The complex will also feature an outdoor water park with waterslides, a tidal pool, current channel, children’s aqua structure, playground and picnic area.

This new facility will bring people to downtown Aldergrove and is a “huge step” toward revitalization of the downtown core, said Mayor Jack Froese.

“This announcement is another example of how Aldergrove steps up when Aldergrove’s asked for help,” Froese said.

“It’s really exciting to see a local business come forward and support the community on a project such as this.”

The Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre is set to open in 2018.
