All alerts off for McCormick Creek fire

The RDCK has rescinded all evacuation alerts for the McCormick Creek fire.

Progress on the McCormick Creek fire near Salmo has resulted in the evacuation alert for all residents in the alert area to be rescinded as of 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25.

“BC Wildfire Service has advised the Regional District of Central Kootenay that the threat posed by the McCormick Creek wildfire has diminished enough to rescind the Evacuation Alert,” said the RDCK in a press release.

Residents are advised to go to the RDCK web site for more information.

The previous evacuation order had been downgraded to an alert on Aug. 22. Highway 6 and the Nelway border crossing, which had both been closed during the evacuation order, reopened at the same time.

The BC Wildfire reports that the fire has burned 410 hectares and is now 100 per cent contained. Smoke may still be visible from Highway 6, and the Salmo area with more smoke expected as afternoon temperatures peak and pockets of unused fuels burn inside the containment lines.

As of Saturday there were 33 firefighters, two helicopters and three pieces of heavy equipment still working mop-up efforts.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
