Alleged three-time Vernon robbery suspect arrested

Business in Fruit Union Plaza hit for the third time

A man is in police custody thanks, in part, to the assistance of some alert citizens.

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP were called to a business in the Fruit Union Plaza on 25th Avenue in Vernon at around 10 p.m. Tuesday night.

A man entered a store and confronted the staff with a knife, demanding money. The two staff members were able to run out of the store, and the suspect fled on foot.

“Frontline officers arrested the suspect at a nearby residence thanks to the assistance of witnesses who observed him fleeing the scene,” said Const. Jocelyn Noseworthy, media relations officer.

“Police believe him to be responsible for two other robberies from the same store that happened on Aug. 27, 2019, and Oct. 19, 2019.”

No one was injured in any of the robberies.

A 51-year-old man is in police custody this morning and will be appearing in Vernon Provincial Court. RCMP are recommending charges of robbery, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose in all three incidents.

The name of the suspect is not being released at this time. The investigation is still ongoing.
