A Kamloops Mountie was taken to Royal Inland Hospital on Thursday afternoon (Feb. 11) following an altercation with a suspected shoplifter. He suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Const. Crystal Evelyn said police responded to a report of a theft in progress at a store downtown at Lansdowne Street and Fourth Avenue.

Evelyn said a man dressed in cammo jogging pants, and a black jacket with grey hoodie allegedly stole merchandise from the store and was being followed by the person who reported the theft.

Shortly after police responded, Evelyn said, an officer called for backup and reported he was injured following an altercation with the suspect. No weapon was involved in the incident.

A 19-year-old Kamloops man was arrested with the help of a police tracking dog and taken to hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
