In accordance with the most recent provincial health orders for at least the next two weeks, Seabird Island Chief Jim Harris said the community is setting up 24-hour checkpoints at the entrances of the community to limit travel and visitors to the First Nations community.
Seabird Island posted a job advertisement late Tuesday (Nov. 9) afternoon looking for up to 10 positions to cover checkpoints, effective immediately.
“Seabird is setting up check point to limit non-essential travel into the community,” the ad reads. “The Checkpoint Security position aims to bolster the COVID-19 efforts Seabird Island Band has already taken.”

Chief Harris asked the community not to travel anywhere outside the community and to not invite visitors into their homes, even if they are relatives, while orders are in effect.
“The only ones allowed in your home should be the ones who live with you,” he said in a brief video address released on Monday morning (Nov. 8). “You should not go out to sporting events like soccer or hockey games. Only [travel if] it’s absolutely necessary.”
Chief Harris encouraged the community to continue wearing masks and regular hand washing.

“With the latest daily positive tests reaching up to over 567, we all need to take this even more seriously than ever,” Chief Harris added. He stated the Seabird Island Council and held an emergency meeting on Sunday (Nov. 8) morning to formulate added safety plans. The added measures include stricter safety protocols at the Seabird Island office, inspecting workplaces to ensure COVID safety and the entrance checkpoints.
