In an effort to keep Alberni Valley residents as informed as possible on the state of public events during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, we have reserved this space for community announcements of the cancellation or postponement of public events.

If you have an event that has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and would like the public to be aware of any postponements or cancellations, please e-mail editor@albernivalleynews.com and put “Cancelled event” in the subject line.

Lightning on the Lake, the annual Sproat Lake regatta that happens in July, has been cancelled.

The Port Alberni Pickleball Association has cancelled its indoor open pickleball tournament originally scheduled for May 30-31

Thunder in the Valley, which was planned for early August on Stamp Avenue, has been cancelled. The event has been re-scheduled for Aug. 7–8, 2021.

The Alberni District Fall Fair, Sept. 10-13, has been cancelled. Organizers are hoping to arrange a number of smaller events, respecting social distancing, in order to remain solvent.

The Five-Acre Shaker music festival scheduled for McLean Mill National Historic Site this summer has been cancelled. Organizers are hoping to return to the mill site in 2021.

The sixth annual Youth Battle of the Bands, scheduled by The Zattzoo Project for May 23, has been cancelled. Organizers are planning to hold a Battle of the Bands in 2021.

The Ron James concert originally scheduled for ADSS has now been postponed until May 4, 2021. Tickets already purchased will be honoured for the new date. Any refunds will be processed at the Rollin Art Centre as soon as the centre is back open and fully operational. FMI: 250-724-3412 (reminder: the art centre is closed due to COVID-19 restrictions)

The fifth annual Solstice Arts Festival, originally scheduled for June 20 and 21, has been cancelled.

The Rollin Art Centre’s summer Teas on the Terrace events have been cancelled until further notice.

The Community Arts Council’s annual book sale, originally scheduled for May 8 and 9, has been postponed. A new date will be announced in the coming weeks.

The 2020 Heritage Fair, scheduled for May 1-2, has been cancelled.

A Night of Bowie—The Definitive Bowie Experience — March 27 concert has been rescheduled to Thursday, Nov. 19, 2020 at the ADSS Theatre (4000 Roger St., Port Alberni). All tickets and seating for the new event date have been secured where possible. Any further directions will be sent directly from the theatre box office.

Alberni Valley Chapter of Canadian Council of the Blind has cancelled monthly meetings until further notice. Contact Jean at 250-724-1272 for more information.

The 27th annual Charity Golf Classic, scheduled for July 3 and 4, has been cancelled.

Mainstage BC, the ‘provincials’ of community theatre, has been cancelled. The festival was scheduled to take place at the Capitol Theatre in July.

The annual Easter event at Coombs Country Candy on April 4 has been cancelled. Coombs Country Candy hopes to make up the loss of the event with a summer event.

The Point in Time Homeless Count, which was scheduled to begin on the evening of April 6, has been postponed.

Char’s Landing has cancelled all March events.

Royal Canadian Legion Branch 293 has cancelled until further notice all events normally held at the branch. The facility is closed until further notice.

Port Alberni Christian Women’s Club is cancelling their luncheon on June 2 at the Barclay Hotel.

The Paramount Theatre (Landmark Cinemas) is closed to the public. Tickets purchased online will be automatically refunded. For tickets purchased in person, reach out to guestservices@landmarkcinemas.com.

The Rollin Art Centre is closed to the public. All art exhibits, performances and programs will be cancelled until further notice. Book donations for the Giant Book Sale will not be accepted.

The Capitol Theatre is closed to the public. The upcoming play I Ought to be in Pictures, educational programs (Stages Youth Theatre, Wee-Glee, Glee, Sea Notes Choirs) and all other events scheduled to take place at the Capitol Theatre have been postponed.

Celtic Chaos scheduled for March 29 has been cancelled.

Divided We Fall, which was to have two performances at the Capitol Theatre on March 20 and 21, has been postponed. New dates will be announced later.

Maritime Heritage Night (Tsunami 1964) scheduled for March 26 has been cancelled.

The Black Sheep Rugby Club’s Fundraising Fiesta scheduled for March 21 has been postponed. At this point, a new date for the event has not been made, but the plan is to host it when appropriate. Ticket refunds are available.

The Alberni Valley Museum Film Fest presentation of Hope Gap scheduled for March 29 has been postponed.

The Timbre! Choir concert Of Love and Marriage scheduled for April 26 has been cancelled.

The Great Central Lake Trout Derby on Easter weekend has been cancelled. Organizers will be in touch with sponsors over the next few days, and tickets that have already been purchased will be honoured next year. For any questions or concerns, email greatcentrallake@shaw.ca.

The Save Our Aquarium Family Fun Day that was scheduled for March 22 has been postponed. You can still donate to the aquarium through their GoFundMe page.

March 21 — Arrowsmith Rotary is postponing Hops Fest that was scheduled for March 21. Ticket refunds are available.

Seedy Saturday

March 21 – Alberni Valley Seedy Saturday has cancelled its event originally planned for Char’s Landing. Vendors will receive refunds and organizers hope to plan a makeup event in the future.

Writers’ Expo

March 21 – The first annual Writers’ Expo planned for Trinity Hall has been cancelled.

Rugby

BC Rugby has cancelled all inter-club play for March 14–15 weekend, including Port Alberni Black Sheep vs. Surrey at the Black Sheep Rugby Club.

Hockey

The Atom Development and Atom House hockey tournaments planned for the Alberni Valley Multiplex March 13–15 and March 20–22 have been cancelled. BC Hockey has cancelled all games and tournaments until further notice.

Greater Victoria Police Chorus — March 22 concert has been postponed.

ADSS Auditorium — Any performances scheduled through to April 6 have been cancelled (*this info has been updated).

Uchucklesaht Tribe Government Education/ Career Fair – March 27 event at the Alberni Athletic Hall has been cancelled.

City of Port Alberni has cancelled any events of more than 250 people until further notice.

All Echo Sunshine Club events, activities, programs and meetings have been cancelled effective March 16, 2020.
