On July 18 at 10:10 a.m., police received a report of copper wire theft from a residence/business on Kenmore Road.
“We’re probably looking at about $300 to $400 worth of copper wires stolen from that location and of particular note was a very large, heavy-duty extension cord with a quad metal receptacle at both ends, it was yellow in colour and that was one of the items taken along with a bunch of scrap wire and armoured cable,” explained Grand Forks RCMP’s Staff Sgt. Jim Harrison.
There were no witnesses but anyone with information can contact Grand Forks RCMP at 250-442-8288.
There have been other reports of copper wire theft recently, including one on July 9 and another on July 10.
Last week, Harrison said copper wire theft is sporadic.
“It comes and goes. Occasionally we get hit with two or three (thefts) and it kind of stops for a week or two or more and it starts again – we get hit with a rash of them again,” Harrison explained, adding the same suspects are usually involved.
“The other things is every time metals go up in price, we see a rash of these types of things,” he said.
The provincial government recently announced new regulations related to metal theft – the Metal Dealers and Recyclers Act.
