Det. Dan Culbertson is the recipient of the Abbotsford Police Department’s (APD) Paul Tinsley Scholarship.

The scholarship is presented annually to an outstanding APD member who is pursuing a post-secondary education while serving the department with distinction.

Culbertson has been an APD officer since 2003 and currently works as a detective in the major crime section.

He previously served with the emergency response team, integrated gang enforcement unit, training section and patrol division.

Culbertson has received several police board and APD management commendations, along with the Provincial Meritorious Service Medal in 2006 and the Provincial Medal of Valour in 2007, both for successful lifesaving efforts.

In early 2013, Culbertson completed his undergraduate bachelor of policing degree from Ontario’s Charles Sturt University, through which he is currently completing the master’s of leadership and management program. He later plans to achieve his doctorate in policing and security.

The APD scholarship is named for Paul Tinsley, a former officer and deputy chief with the APD who died of cancer in 2005.

After his retirement from policing in 2004, he became a full-time faculty member in the department of criminology and criminal justice at University of the Fraser Valley.

To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, well-defined academic goals and potential for success, and an intended field of study that is consistent with, relevant to, and supports the goals, objectives and future requirements of the department.
