CASTLEGAR – A public access restriction is in effect along the Gilpin Forest Service Road, due to the nearby Gilpin wildfire. This area restriction was put in place to protect the public and allow first responders to operate safely in the area.
The area restriction will remain in force until the public is otherwise notified. This restriction applies to Crown land within the following geographic boundaries: the Gilpin Forest Service Road at the junction with Highway 3 in the south, extending to the junction of the Dan O-Rea Forest Service Road in the north. Wednesday’s cooler temperatures and higher humidity helped firefighters and the Gilpin wildfire was 40 per cent contained as of 4:48 p.m. on Wednesday. Sixty-four personnel, three helicopters and three pieces of heavy equipment were working on site. As of Thursday morning at 1:57 p.m., the fire had been 80 per cent contained, and there were 42 personnel, one helicopter and two pieces of heavy equipment on the scene.
