Armstrong’s centennial year will literally end with a bang.
Fireworks will end a “So Long To 2013” centennial celebrations in Armstrong Dec. 29.
The fireworks will go off at 6 p.m. at the IPE fairgrounds, the culmination of day-long activities and the end of a year of recognizing the city’s 100th birthday.
“This is our finale day, so mark your calendar,” said Mayor Chris Pieper. “There are a lot of events put on by a lot of sponsors.”
Events on Dec. 29 will begin at 10 a.m. with a Festival of Trees at the Armstrong Spallumcheen Museum, put on by the museum and art gallery. It runs until 4 p.m.
From 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., there is a free skate at the Nor-Val Sports Centre, put on by the Kinsmen.
Free hot dogs and free smores, along with a big bonfire, will be set up from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the fairgrounds, sponsored by the Armstrong centennial committee and Scouts Canada volunteers.
The centennial committee is also hosting skateboarding at the indoor skate park (horticulture building at the IPE grounds) from 2 to 5 p.m., and roller skating at the Hassen Multi-purpose Arena from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
Weather permitting, there is sledding on all day at the fairgrounds with hills being created for the event.
People are encourage to bring a sled or a crazy carpet.
People are also encouraged to bring items to be buried in Armstrong’s centennial time capsule.
