A Nanoose Bay man charged with arson in relation to an inhabited property following a set fire in an occupied Wellington Road house will serve one year in jail.

Richard Thompson, 19, pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to one year jail last week.

The incident happened Feb. 26 during a house party on the 4100 block of Wellington Road.

The fire started in the laundry room of the home and quickly spread. It took the efforts of several guests and a full fire extinguisher to snuff it out.

The party guests and an 18-month-old baby were in the home at the time of the fire. No one was injured.
